Palin’s Alaska Independence Party That McCain Says Never Happened
It’s interesting that McCain’s campaign slogan is “Country First” yet the slogan the AIP, the party the Palin’s joined is “Alaska First.”
Who is the The Alaska Independence Party?
The Alaskan Independence Party can be summed up in just two words: ALASKA FIRST!
Although the origins of the Alaskan Independence Party, or AIP, date back to the early 1970s, it wasn’t until 1984 that it became an “officially recognized” party by the State of Alaska. Advocating an “Alaska First” policy focused around the land and resource development, the AIP has since emerged as one of the most significant state-level third parties operating in the late 20th century.
The platform of the AIP is, as one would expect, centers on Alaskan issues. Although, it is widely thought to be a secessionist movement. The Party makes great effort to emphasize that its primary goal is merely to vote on secession, something that Party advocates say Alaskans were denied during the founding of the state. A plebiscite was, in fact, held in Alaska at the state’s inception in 1958, but AIP members argue that voting was corrupt and that residents were not given the proper choice between statehood, commonwealth status, or complete separation — something they say has been granted to other U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Alaska Voter Registration Record:
- Gail Fenumiai, director of the Alaska Division of Elections, said Todd Palin twice registered under the Alaskan Independence Party — in 1995 and 2000. Some party leaders have advocated secession from the United States, though that is not a goal listed in the party’s platform.
- Voter registration records show Sarah Palin registered in May 1982 as a member of the Republican Party and has not changed her affiliation. Todd Palin has been registered undeclared since 2002
“In the video titled Sarah Palin and The Alaska Independence Party. AIP – Part 1″ Mr. Clark, Vice Chairmen of The Alaskan Independence Party, is giving this presentation. Clark gives a short history and states that they were officially recognized as a third party by the State of Alaska 25 years ago.
I put the full video up but if you want to jump ahead I’ve put the time codes in. At 2:19 Clark talks about their plank (platform) for eligible voters and talks about U.S. troops being able to vote and refers to them as an occupational army. Then he goes on and on, until 6:00 – 6:45 when he talks about Gov. Sarah Palin “who they were hoping would get electedgovenor”
“She was an AIP member before she became a mayor. To get along to go along she joined the republican party.” “She is sympathetic to our group because of her former membership.”
I don’t know how the McCain camp can dispute Sarah Palin’s membership, affiliation or sympathy with the Alaskan Independent Paty.

Palin officially left the party to become a Republican in 1996, she recorded an address for its convention earlier this year in which she said:
“I share your party’s vision of upholding the constitution of our great state” and told members to “keep up the good work”
