We were just thinking this morning - the mere fact that there has developed an "expectation" that government should address any of our concerns in society is a notion which we should examine carefully. Consider the different reasons for the development of this expectation:

(a)  Government does it best;

(b)  Government is the only way it can be done;

(c)  We abdicated our personal responsibility to handle our own affairs;

(d) By having government do it, we achieve efficiencies which can not be matched individually; and

(e) We pay so much in taxes that we want something of value for our money, and as the amount of taxes paid increases, we expect more for our money.

Some would argue that what we are witnessing in Congress at this point in time is exactly why government should not be allowed to do anything in our society other than those absolutely essential services which can not be provided by the private or non-profit sectors. It is difficult to run any organization, or accomplish any large task, by committee, unless all of the members share the same goals and values. That is obviously not the case with government. We, as a society, have grown to expect the government to perform certain functions; but shouldn’t we be trying to gradually reduce the number of services provided by government, particularly because politicians are intimately connected therewith?

Mary, if your stimulus was sent back, there had to be a problem with your direct deposit numbers or your address. Just call IRS and verify your correct mailing address, they may change it over the phone. If not, they will ask you to fill out and mail form 8822, with your signature on it. It is very important you verify your identity if you want your information changed.
Call 1-800-829-0922 - please be patient if you must wait, you will be glad you did.

MW: "I filed electronically on April 13th. I have yet to get my stimulus check."
What does IRS say when you call them? There are many reasons you may not have received your check. IF:
1) you owe tax for another year
2) you have an outstanding student loan, state tax debt, child support, etc
3) you use a name different from what your social security card shows
4) you have an ITIN (special tax number for those who don't qualify for an SSN)
5) the address on your tax return is wrong
6) you are being audited or have a refund freeze (BTW: if your electronic tax return was rejected and payments show on your account, that will freeze your account)
7) your electronic tax return was rejected
8) you used a paid preparer, you may have been given a Refund Anticipation Loan, whether you knew it or not - your preparer may have put their bank account# on the electronic return

Just FYI:
If you missed the Oct. 15 deadline for filing an income tax return for a economic stimulus payment, don't worry. You can receive a payment in 2009 by filing an income tax return when the filing season opens in January.

If You've Already Filed a Tax Return:
You may have already filed but still have outstanding issues. Find out more if you:
    * Haven’t gotten your economic stimulus payment,
    * Received one for a different amount than you were expecting,
    * Amended your tax return,
    * Changed your address, or
    * Are in the military, have a spouse or children with ITINs instead of valid SSNs and received a reduced or no stimulus payment

If You Didn't File for a Stimulus Payment:
If you didn't file for an economic stimulus payment in 2008 because you weren't sure you were eligible, you may be able to file for a payment in 2009. Find out more if you:
    * Receive Social Security retirement or disability benefits
    * Receive Veterans Affairs pension, disability or survivor's benefits
    * Receive Tier 1 Railroad Retirement benefits
    * Are a low-wage worker

SSDI RECEIPIENT GETS ZIP: Sorry I am late responding to you. Sometimes it is faster to just file an amended return that shows your SSDI income - IRS has posted how to do this. Send a 1040X with Economic Stimulus printed (in RED), put your SSDI amount on line 1, column C, then write on page 2 that you forgot to include your SSDI. Do NOT put any other income on line 1 - IRS already has that number from your first filing.
If you don't want to wait the 8 to 12 weeks for your 1040X to be processed, call Taxpayer Advocate Service.
IRS TAX TIP 2008-74 or http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=137675,00.html
If you have tried to resolve tax problems with the IRS and are still having problems or facing economic harm, you have somewhere to turn: seek the free assistance of the Taxpayer Advocate Service.
Calling the TAS case intake line at 877-777-4778 (TTY/TTD 800-829-4059)

Sorry this happened to your boyfriend. IRS employees are thoroughly screened and checked. IRS processes most tax returns electronically. If your boyfriend pursued his claim, he should have been told to file his own tax return by mail and claim himself, that means claim his own personal exemption. This is a common event. People sometimes claim extra exemptions to reduce the taxes they owe. The only way IRS is alerted that someone was claimed in error, is for that person to file and claim themselves on their own tax returns. IRS has a very efficient process to correct this. But, if no one hollers, nothing will be done.
Have your boyfriend file a 2007 tax return and make sure he claims himself. He will get a letter saying he must file this claim on 2008 tax return (I know, this sounds silly) but what he will have done is alert IRS that he was claimed "erroneously". Then on his 2008 tax return he will get the $300 he was eligible for in 2007.
It is important to pursue the issue if you think you have been claimed wrongly. Otherwise you let someone else get your credits.
If your boyfriend is in an extended care home or hospital, he is at risk of having his identity stolen. This is becoming the favorite place for identity thieves to prowl. You might want to follow up on possible identity theft.

MY BOYFRIEND IS ON DIALYSIS BECAUSE HE HAS NO KIDNEYS AND HAS BEEN ON IT FOR SEVENTEEN YEARS. HE DID NOT RECIEVE A STIMULUS CHECK BECAUSE WHEN HE CALLED IN OCTOBER OF 2008 THEY TOLD HIM SOMEONE FILED HIM ON THEIR TAXES, WHICH DID NOT MAKE ANY SENSE TO ME BECAUSE HE IS NOT A CHILD AND IT IS NOT LIKE THEY ARE GOING TO PAY WHOEVER FILED HIM THAT MONEY. IT DIDNT BOTHER ME I WAS NOT THE ONE TO FILE HIM BUT IT BOTHERED ME BECAUSE HE IS ON FIXED INCOME AND THAT WAS NO REASON NOT TO GIVE HIM HIS CHECK AND THEN ANOTHER LADY THAT LIES BY HIM THAT IS ON FIXED INCOME RECIEVED HER CHECK A COUPLE WEEKS AFTER IT WAS PREDICTED SHE WOULD GET HERS BUT WHY DID HE NOT GET HIS? SHE WAS IN THE SAME POSITION. I THINK EMPOLYEES OF THE IRS NEED TO BE THOROUGHLY CHECK AND MADE TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND ARE TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE THEY JUST LET ANYONE WORK THESE DAYS.
