Atheist soldier claims harassment
- Army Spc. Jeremy Hall sues U.S. for religious discrimination
- Hall is known as “the atheist guy,” called immoral and a devil worshipper
- He turned to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation for help
- “It’s just about time somebody said something” about pressure to believe in God
It eventually came out in Iraq in 2007, when he was in a firefight. Hall was a gunner on a Humvee, which took several bullets in its protective shield. Afterward, his commander asked whether he believed in God, Hall said.
“I said, ‘No, but I believe in Plexiglas,’ ” Hall said. “I’ve never believed I was going to a happy place. You get one life. When I die, I’m worm food.”
The issue came to a head when, according to Hall, a superior officer, Maj. Freddy J. Welborn, threatened to bring charges against him for trying to hold a meeting of atheists in Iraq. Welborn has denied Hall’s allegations.
Hall said he had had enough but feared that he wouldn’t get support from Welborn’s superiors. He turned to Mikey Weinstein and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. (This takes more guts than lying just to get along … Hall is a HERO x 2)
This is not America. This is not the freedom of religion (or lack of) that America espouses. This is the hypocracy that the world sees and judges America as a deluded and dangerous super power. This is not what we send soldiers and mercenaries to fight and die for. Freedom, as mouthed by the Bush Administration, comes out with a different definition.
If I choose to worship a piece of crap or nothing at all, that should be my business. Who or what I worship has nothing to do with my patriotism. What this administration has done is define patriotism as worshiping their narrow definition of their own ‘institutional’ god. They have taken away the foundation this country was built on. No wonder there is so much mistrust and anger. Mind control is the worst abomination the Bush Administration has imposed upon this once great nation. We can dye our hair green, spike it like a porcupine, and tattoo naked people on our bodies. As long as we hate the ‘politically acceptable’ things in the name of a loving god, who had a son through an immaculate sexual encounter, while waving the American flag and putting magnet ribbons on our cars, we are true American Patriots. We are truly a bi-polar, dysfunctional nation that spends more time and money on image while ignoring the substance of life. If a Christian hears voices it must be God. If anyone else hears voices, they are schizophrenic.
America has failed to sell this bullshit and appears to be stuck within its own delusion. Countries have been careful to avoid offending their demented money machine, as we have witnessed. Countries that don’t tolerate the hypocracy, harbor terrorists. As we all know, history teaches us that those who loose are terrorists, those who win are freedom fighters.

When I was in USMC boot camp, *everyone* had to go to church on Sundays. (Whether or not you were religious) The drill instructors appointed folks as honorary Protestants or Catholics if the guys couldn’t make up their minds.
Of course, getting away from the DIs hollering for an hour and a half per week would have been worth it whether you were a believer or not.

Thanks lib, notice the headlines about misdeeds of many troops go un-noticed because those soldiers are good Christian zombies. I’ll bet the farm, if any of those soldiers that that lost control and murdered civilians or committed rape were atheist or muslim there would have accusing headlines across this country. Fox News and Rush Limbaugh would have had a party. Pulpits would have shouted the evils of godless heathens making America look bad. But, sadly, there will be no mention of America’s bad behavior being linked to any Christian sect. It is more acceptable to belittle a free thinker.

I guess they didn’t have honorary stops for Jews, Muslims, Buddhist or Hindus.
Not being able to make ones mind up is far different than having your mind already made up on not believing.

WhosePlayin, that’s just what I mean … your boot camp experience echoes my own experience at Coast Guard boot camp. It was not an option to skip that question, the military wants to know who to send to your funeral and say those few words… “so and so was a good Christian soldier”. Can you imagine what it would sound like to hear … was a good Buddhist, was a good Muslim, was a good Sikh, was a good Jew?

I was going to update a story line I started in 2005 about Bush the Christian Crusader and his Crusader Army in regard to this but I got overwhelmed with other crises. This is a damn mess and we are not ruled by Christians only those that have perverted the Religion for their own gain as they accuse the Islamists of doing!

Thanks Jim, you are so right. I really cannot blame the original Christian religion itself, but it has morphed into something out of a zombie horror flick. The definition of Christianity has changed dramatically. It is now a belief system for perverts and psychos. Christianity is no longer a religion, it is an excuse for awful behavior. The divisiveness of fundamentalist religion is not capable of governing a modern global population. Islam, Christianity and Judaism fundamentalists will be the death of us all, whether we buy their story or not. Why are these religions so hell bent on the prophesy of Armageddon that they are willing to sacrifice the entire human population?

Yes indeed this mis-Administration has perverted Christianity to fit their need. i have found that many have done that through AA as away to justify their inequities as this mis-Administration does. These are not true Christians. The meaning of Christianity hasn’t changed. what is terrible is we have unbridled perverted “Conservative” Religiosity on all sides of this mess Including Iran, Israel, and sadly us thanks to the idiots in charge. All good citizens of the world caught in the middle! sadly mutual destruction use to be a deterrent to nuclear war. Today it appears to be the goal. Bush the idiot who says he works for God appears to have that in mind. You can think nothing else knowing how fragile the planet is already and we are preparing to make it uninhabitable!

Hello All,
Jim is correct. “The meaning of Christianity hasn’t changed.” Jesus Christ is still anti-war. He is still against coercion. He will never force anyone to believe. It can’t be done.
Jesus is for the voluntary giving-and-sharing economy (The Christian Commons). He is not for greed and naturally is against all violence in support of it.
Please don’t lump real Christians in with false-Christians such as George W. Bush. George is strictly Old Testament at best.

Good he deserved it. Why is it okay for atheist to harass religious people but not the other way around? Atheist can act like self rightous, arrogant, smuggish pricks to anyone they want because they CLAIM to not believe in ia higher power…and they can attack and belittle every religious person around them..that is not only acceptable but encouraged and religious people are exepect to take it and go along with it? But if an atheist gets harassed OMG, man up the watch tower time to go to town and sue every religious person there is! Total hyprocisy. He made the choice to be atheist, in the military where is filled with VERY religious people that hold their faith to their core, then he harasses and berates them, then expects it not to come back on him? I don’t think so. Besides that, if you can’t humble yourself enough to serve God and accept him and realize all glory and honor goes to Him in your life, you have NO business being in the military. He should be discharged and the Army should sue HIM for embarassing them. He had it coming, what a hypocritical bully. And when it comes to the muzzies, they are not a religion anyway. They are scum and need to be eliminated. How easily we forgot the terror they cause around the world! All in the name of political correctness. The only people that know god are bible reading and scripture following Christians, that do not belong to some silly church. And it is ONLY those people that should be serving in uniform. We do not need militant anti-god nazis like atheists and muslims and catholics and such serving in the military. None of those people know god at all, they all just serve themselves. And you clearly didn’t read the article…he said that he drove soliders to their churches and respectfully was silent during their meal prayers Where did you get he bullied and haraased anyone? I say “second Hand” because it is evident you have not actually read the bible. Jesus was a Rabbi who sought to revolutionize the Hebrew legal ethic. Judaism is the foundation faith that spun off Christianity and Islam. “People of the Book” means Jews, Christians and Muslims. Each of these powerful religions have fractured into many sects. Each of these religions have a violent, dysfunctional fringe that exploits followers with low self esteem. These followers can be convinced to belittle anyone who does not succumb to mind control. Your words demonstrate that you are a victim of this fringe group. You can help yourself by reading the bible from front to back, then reading the Koran and the Torah. You must at least know what you are saying before you spout poison fed to you by a fringe sect. If God speaks to you personally, I suggest you take notes.

i love with all my heart,and it makes me sad to see hate spread around and handed out like cookies.and most ,but not all,christians just eat it up.i love gays,lesbians,i love all people.I don’t care where you come from,what you did in your past all people deserve to be forgiven,i do not call it sin,i call it making a mistake.love yourself,love other people,and if you can’t try,all people know how to love,love is powerful.love people of all colors,shades,just love,love is the most powerful thing you can give and recieve.When the three christians harassed me i went to the bathroom broke down and cryed,it was so humiliating i just wanted to die.And the next day,there was a girl in my class,i glanced over at her,and she was talking to someone at her table,she said she hated me,she is a christian but that hurt like a stab to the heart,she was showing me hate,M.G. show some love,isn’t that what christians are supposed to do?!

You won’t get an argument out of me. I am really tired of listening to Christians tell everyone what to do and ow to do it. The Bush administration encouraged that behavior both domestic and foreign. Look at all the hate that has comes with religious posturing. And, look at all the wars and lives lost in the name of “their god.”
When I hear or read someone quoting religion to make their point, I really have to wonder just how curious they really are about the world they live in.
While you and I love all humans of every shape, color and size, religious followers will never understand that,they are conditional. They can only understand the condition(s) “their god” has set out for them.
