Kucinich Kicked From Last Iowa Debate

Today in Iowa, Dennis Kucinich was informed by the Des Moines Register that he will not be invited to attend the final Iowa debate before the caucus. Why you ask, because Dennis did not formally open an office with paid staff in Iowa. I fully understand that states want to get financial support for workers; however, in the current climate of politics with everyone in someone’s pocket, I find this highly insulting. While voters are trying to change the status quo, a newspaper has the authority to deny Kucinich and his supports his very last shot before the caucus. Funny this insult wasn’t in the Des Moines Register.

What they did publish today was how important this last debate is for all candidates in both parties. Des Moines Register had the nerve to title their debate article “Last debates could have seismic impact;” interesting choice of words after they kick a candidate to the curb.

The Hill:

The Des Moines Register informed the campaign that Kucinich is not invited because the newspaper determined “that a person working out of his home did not meet our criteria for a campaign office and full-time paid staff in Iowa,” the campaign said.

Kucinich, who is running his second consecutive presidential campaign but is doing poorly in national polls, has received strong support in online surveys from liberal groups such as Democracy for America. The Ohio lawmaker’s anti-war campaign resonates with parts of the Democratic base even though that support has not boosted Kucinich from the lower tier of candidates.

The campaign blasted the decision to exclude the lawmaker from the debate.

“The Iowa caucuses have been portrayed as having national implications, and if the Register has decided to use hair-splitting technicalities to exclude the leading voice of the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party, then the entire process is suspect,” the campaign said in a statement about the “arbitrary and unreasonable exclusion.”

The campaign claims that Kucinich has also been barred from public appearances by “the Iowa Democratic Party, Iowa Public Television, and well-funded political interests…”

With nearly twenty candidates running for the nominations of the two major parties, the format of the debates have been an issue all year long.

And we are proud of our “democracy ” why ? someone remind me. If this is not more proof as if any more were needed that the whole process is rigged and corrupt i do not know what is. Its just dispicable. And this stuff cannot be voted away - we will need seriously radical changes in the electoral process, from lobbiests contributions, to e - voting before things are ever set right - if that is even possible now. Too many in power, love their money and their power , more than the statesmanship that comes with the Oath of office. This is what Imperialism and Empire looks like in America. WE are soaking in a sea of not so subtle fascism.

Newspapers should not have the power to dictate how a candidate runs their business. As long as the candidates play by their part rules and the election rules then they should NEVER be excluded from any part of the primary or general election process.

Thia is a prime example of corporations taking over every single aspect of our country.

I think that would be a great idea…everyone post on Kucinich.

It is disgusting that he is taken. Kucinich and his supporters should be protesting to have his voice hear. This is a disgrace.

[...] weepin’ jesus on the cross! i have had it! i am beyond crabby because i am sick and tired of lying, cheating, stealing, corruption and most of all– greed. why does everything have to be corrupt and underhanded? why can’t we have real debates for real people who really want to represent the people of america? if there were any republicans or democrats in this room right now with me- i would rip them not only new assholes- but any other holes that needed widening or just make new ones. fucking ridiculous. these ‘people’ pay lip service to change and saving democracy and all of that happy horseshit- meanwhile they laugh behind the scenes as they work to maintain the status quo with the entire planet hanging in the balance. nice priorities. what pray tell has gotten my panties all in a bunch? reading in my google reader again. since i am on a self imposed news blackout (and now you see why) i catch up on fellow bloggers- who are apparently the reason that the world has gone to hell not bush and cheney- and i happened upon this gem at blue bloggin’ [...]

They are full of crap. Kicking Kucinich is kicking the Constitution he carries around. I think Dennis should show up pull out his pocket Constitution and say “freedom of speech is my right”

Screw that newspaper!! How dare they dictate who can debate and who can’t because their state isn’t getting enough money from a candidate.

The republicans had their debate today and the Des Moines Register didn’t kick Alan Keyes out. Do they actually think Keys has a staff in Iowa.
