Musharraf, No Longer Protected, May Not Last Long
Analysts say the move is likely to leave Musharraf in a weaker position. “He is vulnerable to the opposition as well as to the restoration of the Supreme Court,” said Vali R. Nasr, an adjunct senior fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations. If the court is restored, it could reject the validity of Musharraf’s presidency, Nasr said, and he could face a host of charges, including over the legality of the state of emergency he imposed earlier this month. ![]()
“Musharraf must now rely on the army and the intelligence agency to keep the judiciary and opposition at bay,” Nasr told Forbes.com.
“Musharraf’s remaining in power is not serving the military’s, Pakistan’s or America’s interests. The more that is becoming apparent, his leadership is under threat,” Vali said. “I doubt he will survive in the president’s role for long either.”
The U.S. has pumped around $11 billion in aid into Pakistan since Musharraf came to power in a coup in October 1999, enlisting it as a key ally in its war on Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Be prepared, there will be excitement in Pakistan very soon. When Musharraf ends emergency rule, the government and the Supreme Court is restored, there will be hell to pay. Of course this assumes Musharraf will honor his promise. He knows the United States is preparing ‘Plan B’. He is too savy to allow his grip to weaken. BossKitty expects Musharraf to have a ‘Plan B’ of his own. Regardless of the script he was forced to follow, don’t count him out. Pakistan is more volatile now than before.

This dance of the usa and its continual backing of dictators for self interests of the moment will be one to watch. The supreme court must be re instated. All the interviews on the BBC show to me at least a very evolved and beautiful people , that want their constitution back. I will be watching closely too. What a history the usa has of making deals with the devil ..a clear symtom of our loss of moral compass. And it goes way way back.. I am all excited..my book The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein finally arrived. She goes deeply into , the usa disaster capitalism and exploitation in Chili, and other places. Dammit BK i want some semblance of our “higher angels” to manifest. Evil has been in the drivers seat of american foreign and domestic policy for too too long.
