Slim Coverage For Saturday’s Anti-War Protest
Protesters gather to march on Capitol
WASHINGTON (AP) –
The protesters gathered in Lafayette Park with signs saying “End the war now” and calling for President Bush’s impeachment. The rally, organized by the ANSWER Coalition and other groups, was expected to conclude with a march to the Capitol.
Are there any congressmen attending this event? Update:
Well, the media did not really get interested until the arrests were made. Why? Because all the politicians that were supposed to be impressed or incensed by the protest were gone! What amarketing failure!
When these events are planned, who researches the impact? Who researches the audience? Basic marketing 101 tells us that the best impact is when you have a captive audience and widest coverage. This protest was a waste of time. The slim coverage came when not quite 200 protesters were arrested … ho hum. Next time do the homework. Consult with a freshman marketing student. This event wasn’t even a ‘peep in the woods’ against the multi-million dollar advertising machine run by our ‘Bubble Boy’ and the ‘A-Bomb-A-Nation’.

well i have to disagree, the next time and all this week it has to be larger. It is our only way really to let our voices be counted..whether they count us or not. I wish i could afford to be there. Marching and demonstrations are not a waste of time at all. If those of us at home , who have stock portfolios would start divesting from the funds that indirectly help the war profiteers..maybe we could help things implode here, which is what needs to happen, in the mean time, its death by a thousand small cuts. Why is that those who stay home, criticize ? WE need to start joining these groups, imperfect as they may be and build coalitions, start raising funds for buses, from every state. The voting booth is not gonna change this path the usa is on much. We need to IMPEACH and revisit the so called “bush doctrine” of pre emptive war. Him having a doctrine is laughable but that is beside the point. But if i understood you correctly and you are putting down this demonstration..i got to say…please rethink that. Too many have already despaired that demonstrations do not work, but its what we have - our right to peacefully gather to address the government with our grievances..lets fault the MSM not the demonstrators -please- it is they who are failing us regular people.

ProudP:
I think marches and protest do work however, there hasn’t been enough marches on Washington as compared to the Viet Nam War. I know that this march was advertised a great deal on the net through blogs but was pretty silent in the MSM. What I am disappointed at was the lack of MSM attention during the march. I know that the MSM misses most of what goes on but they are unfortunately, where most Americans get their sound bit news from.
Maybe march organizers need to do a media blitz to the MSM prior to the events.
For the protesters to have maximum impact, they should not have picked a weekend when Congress was not around. Congress shut down, at least the Senate at noon on Wednesday for the week in observance of Rosh Hashanah.
These protest and marches are far too important for the organizers to have calendar and MSM ignorance. It should not have taken the arrests for this to make the TV and newspapers it should have been for the cause and the message.

Proud, its not the demonstration I’m disappointed in, its the planning. Something as important as a demonstration of angst the American people have for this catastrophe should be better planned for maximum impact. These voices did not get the attention they could have if their timing was better or their pre-planning was better. The MSM latched onto arrests and made the message secondary.
No, the efforts of protest are never wasted, but timing and coverage is everything in this Marketed Nation. I did not hear many speeches televised and live coverage was almost non-existent. Post Game coverage was about arrests. Who ever plans these events need to do their homework, there are many willing Marketing Geniuses ready to contribute to this effort.

wow the email alert to comments is great ..yay team.
well yeah the demos are are smaller, there is no draft. Maybe we need one. If it will wake the country up..we are already divided bitterly the kool aide drinkers and the reality based folks..omfg i just read that Greenspan says the war is about OIL..ya think ?
i see your points about marketing etc. But you know when we feed into the frame work we are giving tacit approval. One could argue but but that is the reality , thats the way it is. ..well its the way it is until we change it. Do it anyway. We who were well aware of the demonstration on Sat (when most workers could get there) and those for this week can be and ought to be encouraged..we ought to help synergize with the world can’t wait and answer, united for peace and justice and any of our local groups…Hey its our civil rights IF we do not use them they will slip away further. Its sad that only the arrests seem to garner atttention but on the other hand…Lets applaud those healthy and conscious enough to lay their personal lives on the line to even be arrested. Their actions are time honored. WE do the regular folks a dis service when from the cat bird seat we say well geeze did you think of this or that…..hell they got there..Did I ? NO. And for every one of those 10,000 there, how many are at home wishing they could be there. Congress even if they were there, would not have paid attention..they are tone deaf to the peace movement. The ususal “progressives” Waters , Lee and maybe a couple of others, could have gotten there, they didn’t..tells you something doesn’t it ? I saw no television coverage at all..actually. but i was not watching the news - actually i did not expect any - so what this tells me..is also something positive..in a way. The grassroots is growing , organizing, and doing ! let the MSM ignore as much as they want. It must not decrease our committment to change..Our support and encouragement of those able to take to the streets in DC or in their towns and states.
I also worry that some larger popular blogs are not supporting and poo pooing street actions…this is extremely misguided in my humble opinion. So while we on the blogs cover them. cry out for change, Lets try try try to be positive..
MSM ignoring them is nothing new. The slander of Peace Activists is nothing new either. Peace shouldn’t require Marketing. And we know damn well that even the best marketing is not gonna stop the conservative bias in media.. tune into Free Speech TV monday , you will see plenty of coverage is my bet on Democracy Now, which of course is also on the radio.
This demo was in direct reaction to the Betrayus report and if u look at the pics on Ntodd’s blog, Sirens Chronicles, and Pax americana you will see something that heartens you many pictures. WE cannot detract is my point, could it have been larger, well i sure wish i could have afforded to get there. I went to one giant march in washington when i lived in NY. It was the 87 march for LGBT issues - it was incredible.
Sadly the fascists running the show, would ignore 1 million as easily as 10 thousand. They simply do not want to hear us.
