Russian bombers launch missiles over Arctic

Russia: Arctic Bomber Exercises

Twelve Russian strategic bombers are taking part in military exercises above the Arctic involving the launching of tactical cruise missiles.

The Russian air force spokesman did not specify the exact location of the exercises but confirmed that the TU-95MC bombers would take off from five air bases stretching from the Volga River city of Engels to Anadyr on the Chukotka Peninsula overlooking the United States.

President Vladimir Putin announced last month that Russia has resumed long-range patrols by its bomber planes for the first time since the end of the Cold War.

“The planes will also practice mid-air refueling from Il-78 transport planes,” he said.

In June The Kremlin was angered by US plans to move missile systems into eastern Europe. Mr Putin threatened to aim Russian nuclear missiles at European cities in retaliation.

Sergei Ivanov, the hawkish Russian defence minister seen as a possible successor to Mr Putin when he stands down next year, announced an eight-year £100 billion military upgrade. Defence spending has quadrupled since Mr Putin came to power in May 2000.

While we were sleeping and having dreams about Middle East Empires, Russia is pissed off. It holds hands with China and agrees that the US is out of control, they decide to ‘buddy up’. North Korea, in the meanwhile, is getting closer to what it wanted all along, RESPECT. Their name is being scratched off the ‘evil nation’ list and Kim will get his favorite booze … The good ole Cold War days, James Bond and I Spy, are returning to a country near you. What a relief this will be. Let those double agents knock each other off in clandestine scenarios instead of trashing whole countries. Oh yeah, Cold War is more doable than what we have now. Watch Putin’s successor very closely, hope he remembers “mutually assured destruction” (the MAD rule) that kept everyone alive and on their guard.

Just a little frightning I’d say.

A sham that the US moved away from “MAD” to “flexible response” under ronnie raygun. Under flexible response, the US claims the right to use nukes in a first strike! We have seen our country escalate this military madness for decades, and now it is producing it’s bitter fruit…
