Florida “The Screw Up State”
Florida Democratic Chair Karen L. Thurman, many be facing the loss of all
Does it really matter who cast the first, third or last vote? No, it’s just another way for
- Florida Democrats could lose their votes for the presidential nominee next year unless they change plans to hold their primary earlier than national party rules allow.
- The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee was poised Saturday to vote against Florida’s plans for a Jan. 29 primary and to strip the state of delegate votes at the national convention in Denver next year, several party officials said.
- With other states rushing to set early nominating contests, Florida offers the first test of the DNC’s resolve to restore order to the schedule it set last year. Michigan and New Hampshire also are considering moving up their voting, in violation of the party rules.
- Several party officials said they want to take a tough stand against Florida and send a message to other states. The shifting dates have added some uncertainty to the presidential candidates’ campaign plans with the first votes to be cast in less than five months.
- Party rules say states cannot hold their 2008 primary contests before Feb. 5, except for Iowa on Jan. 14, Nevada on Jan. 19, New Hampshire on Jan. 22 and South Carolina on Jan. 29. Florida ignored that calendar and passed a law setting its date for Jan. 29.
- According to the rules, a violation means penalties: The Democratic congressional delegation and DNC members from Florida would lose their votes for the nominee at the Denver convention.
- Also, the party’s Rules and Bylaws Committee would decide whether to strip Florida of anywhere from half to all of its 185 other delegates to the convention.
- The state party would have 30 days to change its plan before the sanctions would go into effect. Florida’s Democratic lawmakers are pledging to fight back.
- “We are quite concerned that Florida Democrats are going to lose their right to vote,” Sen. Bill Nelson told reporters Friday. Recalling the 2000 presidential election controversy in Florida, he added, “And of all states, we have the sensitivity of this because of what we have gone through.”
Way to go Karen. With this kind of screw up and stubbornness not to change the schedule back, Turman should be eligible for a job in the Bush administration; after all there are plenty of vacancies.

Wow….and lol..you “wonder if they are trying to get into some kind of record book of states that help Democrats lose presidential elections.”
This is an interesting post !!! Thank you for the research and documentation NY Texan.
The DNC would be cutting off its nose to spite its face? hmm whose side are they on ?
Maybe they need to lighten up.
Where was the DNC when all those electoral fruads in that state, took place in 2000 and 2004. How much did they spend to solve those problems and count the votes ? I recall it was the Green Party that was most involved in those lengthly legal reviews. Much was at stake.
This is just preposterious, the electoral college sucks bad enough -
The DNC and the RNC have too much control over the electoral college and perpetuates it. They both ARE it.
The electoral college is so flawed. This would be a surreal travesty. BUT -
There are other models of elections there is another way to do this…election stuff. Run offs etc. Lots of different ways.
Maybe we could do it this way. One national primary day. After a set time of campaingning which is publically financed has at least 4-5 major debates/forums, by all parties, with up to and including at least 3 Independents, with solid platform content presented on set dates.
All the people vote on primary day in April. 7 monthes before Nov. Same time every year prior to Election day - then on that day once again ALL the people vote, on paper, Its a holiday. The votes are counted. The person with the Most wins. Counting is completely transparent and allowed to continue until it is done. wks, a month whatever it takes..they get counted. Sounds a bit wonky, but its much better than what we have now. Great Post ! very interesting

How can millions be condemned due to the screwup of a VERY few? The states of Florida and Michigan citizens were told when they could cast their votes, they did nothing wrong. Where does this corruption end? First Bush, now this. Why waste time and money on primarys when everything was already predestined by our government? Why else would innocent Americans not have their votes heard? The DNC party should be disciplined not the people.
